The name Tennis is derived from the Old French word ‘Tenez’ which means ‘take!’ or ‘receive!’ It was a call from the server that they are about to serve. The medieval form of the game evolved 3 centuries ago from the French “jeu de paume” (game of the palm), which involved using one’s bare hands to play. The bare palm slowly got replaced by a glove, and then the glove by a racquet. (the term racket comes from the Arabic word rakhat – which means palm)
