The History of Football

Football or Soccer is considered by many as the King’s Sport. In Europe especially, it is surely the sport that has the most followers. The earliest record of Football was in China in 3rd century BC, where there are mentions of a game resembling football in military manuals. The Han Dynasty played a game called Tsu’Chu, which is similar to today’s football in some ways.

Modern football as we know it today originated in Britain in around 1850s. Up until then, every playing team used to have their own set of rules. The University of Cambridge came up with “Cambridge Rules” and pretty soon many schools & associations started playing by these rules. The early forms of football were much violent and thus in the wake of industrialization every one started following the Cambridge Rules.

The Rules

The Rules of Football in The League of Cities are as follows :

Playing Time is for 60 minutes, with time pauses every time the ball is not in play. There are two halves of 30 minutes each. The half-time break is of 10 minutes.

Men & Women Teams will both be playing the same game, but they shall face each other in one of the two halves. The captains of the team that win the toss get to decide whether the Men’s or the Women’s Teams play each other first. The scores are carried over to the other half while the switch is made

Knockout games will proceed to an extra time of 30 minutes (2 halves of 15 minutes). If the scores are still level, the outcome is decided by a Penalty Shootout

A total of 6 shootouts are allotted – 3 from the Men’s Team & 3 from the Women’s Team. The Goalkeeper from the Men’s team cannot defend a penalty shoot by a Women’s Team opponent, and vice versa. If the scores are still level, the outcome is decided by alternating Men & Women penalty kicks.
